In 1993, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa became the first Nepali woman to summit Mount Everest.
Her achievement wasn’t just about climbing a mountain; it was about shattering barriers.
Pasang grew up in a society where women were often told their place was in the home, not on the world’s highest peak. Despite repeated failures and immense personal sacrifice, she kept returning, each time stronger, more determined, until she finally stood on the summit.
Her story is not only one of courage, but also of challenging the glass ceilings that exist in every profession and culture. Pasang showed that ceilings, whether on a mountain or in an organisation, are not immovable. They can be broken through persistence, resilience, and belief in one’s potential.
For today’s leaders, her legacy is a reminder:
🔹 Talent and determination know no gender.
🔹 Representation at the top matters — it shows others what’s possible.
🔹 True leadership is about opening paths for those who follow.
Every glass ceiling broken makes the climb a little easier for those behind us.
💭 What “Everest” are you climbing, and how can you help others on the way up?
